To create a comfortable and healthy indoor environment, it's important to insulate your entire home, including the floors, walls, and roof. Proper insulation helps keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, maintaining a pleasant temperature of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius year-round. While insulation needs may vary depending on where you live in New Zealand, the basic concept remains the same.

One key consideration is avoiding thermal bridging. This occurs when parts of your home's structure create a direct path for heat or cold to move between the inside and outside. Common culprits include structural components like wall frames, especially where there is a lot of framing or intersections, such as between floors and walls or between walls and roofs. Thermal bridges can reduce the effectiveness of your insulation and even lead to condensation problems.

To address this issue, many people use the "Outsulation" approach, which involves placing insulation on the outside of the building. Outsulation is a robust solution for older buildings that may require significant interior changes.

For our project, we are using Rockwool ThermalRock S60 insulation supplied by Outright for the walls. We'll install it tightly to minimize thermal bridging.

Enstall offered to support the innovative Ara ParkaWrap project by leading the installation of the system. Since 2013, Enstall have a track record of improving the performance of existing homes. Enstall believe that the most cost-effective energy is the energy you save. Elevate your home and improve your lifestyle with Enstall. The team specializes in the following elements of the ParkaWrap system:

1) Airtightness membranes and sealants, with a focus on ceiling/top-plate and floor-to-external wall connections.
2) Installation of flashing tapes for door and window replacements.
3) Installation of the Starke external replacement window and door systems.
4) Installation of ParkaWrap specialist clips.
5) External insulation using Rockwool and Enertherm on external walls, blow-in TruFill® i
nsulation for the ceiling, and full-depth insulation for the underfloor, complete with a windwash barrier.

  • Why was Rockwool used rather than PIR insulation?
Both Rockwool and Enertherm PIR were used on this project – and both have been used for Outsulation before. Rockwool is ideal for retrofitting because it accommodates the irregularities in the original substrate.
  • Why did you add the insulation to the gable end?
The PIR section is half the thickness of the Rockwool for the same R-value which allowed us to cope with a step in the existing cladding line, and the height lines up with the ceiling insulation depth – the gap can be seen in the below detail.
